EMC Directive guidance
September 1st 2009

UK safety and compliance consultant, Laidler Associates, is offering a package of services for businesses to help them meet the requirements of the EMC Directive.

Services include assistance with testing, preparation of documentation, and support for engineers in solving any problems encountered during the certification and compliance processes.

The latest EMC Directive 2004/108/EC was transposed into UK law by the EMC Regulations '06, which came into force on 20th July '07. Manufacturers were granted a two-year transitional period to meet the new requirements, during which time it was permissible to declare compliance with either the new directive or its predecessor, 89/336/ EC. This period ended on 20th July '09, from which date compliance with the new directive has been mandatory for apparatus sold in EU states.

All declarations of conformity relating to the old directive ceased to have validity on the same date and they cannot, therefore, be used to support CE marking.

Key changes include: improved definitions, improved clarity of requirements, simplification of assessment procedures and the introduction of the concept of fixed installations.
